Standard ANSI B16.11 ANSI B1.20.1 ANSI B16.25
Leak Tightness Excellent (welded) Good (sealant required) Best (full-penetration weld)
Pressure Limit Full Class 900/1500/2500 Reduced at high temperature Full Class 900/1500/2500
Installation Socket weld on site No welding required Butt weld on site
Typical Application Permanent HP installations Instrument, sampling, temporary Pipeline, permanent welding

FAQ - RJ Bonnet Forged Check Valve 900LBS - 1500LBS - 2500LBS

Q1: What is an RJ Gasket Bolted Bonnet design?
A: RJ (Ring Joint) Gasket Bolted Bonnet uses a metal ring gasket seated in a machined groove between the bonnet and body, secured by bolts. When the bolts are tightened, the metal ring is compressed into the groove, creating a metal-to-metal seal that is highly reliable for Class 900 and above high-pressure service. The RJ design combines the maintenance convenience of a bolted bonnet with the superior sealing integrity of a metal ring gasket — ideal for high-pressure oil & gas, wellhead, and gas injection applications.
Q2: Why use RJ Bolted Bonnet instead of PSB for Class 900/1500/2500?
A: RJ Bolted Bonnet and PSB are both suitable for Class 900 and above. RJ Bolted Bonnet uses a metal ring gasket compressed by bolts, providing excellent sealing integrity and easy trim replacement. PSB uses internal line pressure to self-energize the seal, providing the best sealing at the highest pressure. RJ Bolted Bonnet is preferred when maintenance access is important; PSB is preferred for the most extreme pressure service where bolt load alone may not be sufficient. Both designs are fully compliant with BS 5352 and API 602.
Q3: What is the difference between SW, NPT, and BW ends for RJ Bonnet valves?
A: SW (Socket Weld) ends are welded to the pipe, providing excellent leak tightness and full Class 900/1500/2500 pressure capability — preferred for permanent high-pressure installations. NPT (Threaded) ends are screwed onto the pipe without welding — preferred for instrument lines and sampling systems. BW (Butt Weld) ends provide full-penetration welding, the best leak tightness, and are preferred for pipeline and permanent welding applications. For Class 2500 RJ Bonnet service, SW and BW are recommended over NPT due to the extreme pressure rating.
Q4: How do I choose between Ball, Piston, and Swing type?
A: Piston type uses a piston that moves along the flow axis, providing fast closing and tight sealing — the most common type for NPS 1/2 to 1 Class 2500 RJ Bonnet service. Ball type uses a ball that moves along the seat, suitable for viscous fluids and varying flow rates. Swing type uses a hinged disc that swings on a hinge pin, providing lower pressure drop — suitable for NPS 1.5 to 2 sizes in Class 900/1500. For high-pressure small-bore service, Piston type is generally recommended; for larger sizes with lower pressure drop requirements, Swing type can be considered.
Q5: What is the difference between RJ Bonnet and standard BB (flat gasket bolted bonnet)?
A: Standard BB uses a flat or spiral wound gasket between the bonnet and body, compressed by bolts. This is suitable for Class 150 to 600 general service. RJ Bonnet uses a metal ring gasket seated in a machined groove, providing a metal-to-metal seal that is highly reliable for Class 900 and above. RJ Bonnet is preferred for high-pressure wellhead, gas injection, and other critical service. For Class 900/1500/2500, RJ Bonnet is the standard design because flat gaskets may not maintain sealing integrity at these pressure levels.
Q6: Can RJ Bonnet valves be repaired or maintained?
A: Yes — RJ Bolted Bonnet design allows the bonnet to be unbolted for internal trim access. Once the bolts are removed, the bonnet can be lifted off and the RJ ring gasket, disc, seat, and hinge pin can be inspected or replaced. This is a significant advantage over PSB (Pressure Seal Bonnet) designs, which require depressurization and seal ring release before bonnet access. For critical Class 2500 service, we recommend stocking spare RJ ring gaskets and trim parts to minimize downtime.
