Reference: ASTM A351, EN 10213, EN 10283. CF8 is the most economical stainless steel grade for Class 150 Y strainers, suitable for non-chloride corrosive service; CF8M and CF3M are selected for chloride, high-purity and pharmaceutical service.

A351-CF8 Y Strainer Screen Selection: Perforated Plate vs Wire Mesh

Screen Type Opening Size Material Typical Application
Perforated Plate 1mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm SS304, SS316 Coarse filtration, high dirt load, large debris removal in water and chemical lines
Wire Mesh 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 mesh SS304, SS316 Fine filtration, pump and instrument protection in water, food and chemical service
Combined Screen Perforated plate + wire mesh SS304, SS316 High dirt load with fine filtration requirement, common in food and pharmaceutical service

FAQ - A351-CF8 Cast Steel Y Strainer 150Lb

Q1: What is A351-CF8 cast stainless steel?
A: A351-CF8 is an ASTM standard cast stainless steel grade defined in ASTM A351. It corresponds to SS304 wrought material and contains approximately 18% chromium and 8-10% nickel. CF8 offers excellent general corrosion resistance and is the most economical stainless steel grade for Class 150 Y strainers. It is equivalent to EN-GX5CrNi18-10 (EN 1.4308) in European standard and GB ZG0Cr18Ni9 in Chinese standard. Service temperature range is -29°C to 425°C. CF8 is suitable for non-chloride corrosive service such as water, food, dilute acid and general chemical applications.
Q2: What is the difference between A351-CF8 and A351-CF8M?
A: CF8 (SS304, EN 1.4308) contains chromium and nickel but no molybdenum, offering general corrosion resistance at the lowest cost. CF8M (SS316, EN 1.4408) adds 2-3% molybdenum, providing significantly better resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and marine environments. CF8 is selected for non-chloride service such as water, food and general chemical, while CF8M is preferred for chloride-containing media, seawater, marine and pharmaceutical service. For Class 150 low-pressure water and food applications, CF8 is the most economical choice; for chloride or offshore service, CF8M should be specified.
Q3: Is ANSI Class 150 equivalent to PN20 for stainless steel Y strainers?
A: ANSI Class 150 (19.6 bar / 285 psi) and PN20 (20 bar / 290 psi) are widely regarded as equivalent pressure ratings in international projects, with nearly identical design pressures at ambient temperature. Both are suitable for low-pressure water, food and general chemical service. Flange dimensions and bolt pattern differ between the two standards: PN20 follows DIN EN 1092-1, and ANSI Class 150 follows ASME B16.5. Please specify the standard when requesting a quotation. For higher pressure, Class 300 or PN40 are available.
Q4: What is the difference between perforated plate and wire mesh screens for CF8 Y strainers?
A: Perforated plate screens are made from a stainless steel plate with punched holes of 1mm to 5mm, providing high mechanical strength and high dirt holding capacity. They are used for coarse filtration and large debris removal in water treatment, food and large diameter pipelines. Wire mesh screens are woven from SS304 or SS316 wire with 10 to 100 mesh openings, providing finer filtration for pump and instrument protection. Combined screens (perforated plate + wire mesh) are often specified for food and pharmaceutical main lines where both high dirt load and fine filtration are required.
Q5: What is the size range and end connection available?
A: A351-CF8 Y strainers are available from 2 inch to 24 inch (DN50 to DN600). End connections include Flanged FF (Flat Face) and Flanged RF (Raised Face) to ASME B16.5. Face-to-face dimension follows ASME B16.10. Drain connection is available as plug or flange. For sizes above 24 inch, a special fabricated design may be evaluated; please contact us with your specific requirement.
Q6: How do I maintain an A351-CF8 Y strainer?
A: A351-CF8 Y strainer maintenance is simple: isolate the strainer, depressurize, remove the cover bolts (bolted cover design), take out the screen, clean or replace it, install a new gasket (graphite or PTFE), and reassemble. The Y-shaped body allows screen removal without disconnecting the pipeline. For continuous water or food processing operation, a bypass line or dual-strainer configuration is recommended. Screen replacement is recommended when the pressure drop exceeds the initial clean-screen value by 0.5-1.0 bar. For food and pharmaceutical service, clean or replace the screen after each CIP cycle.
