Basket Strainer Pressure Rating Comparison: ANSI vs DIN

Standard Pressure Rating Design Pressure (bar) Design Pressure (psi) Typical Application
ANSI Class 150Lbs 19.6 285 Water distribution, HVAC, general industrial piping, low-pressure service
ANSI Class 300Lbs 51 740 General hydrocarbon, process piping, medium-pressure service
ANSI Class 600Lbs 102 1,480 High-pressure process, refinery, power plant
DIN PN6 / PN10 6 / 10 87 / 145 Low-pressure water, HVAC, district heating return lines
DIN PN16 / PN25 16 / 25 232 / 362 District heating supply lines, water distribution, medium-pressure steam
DIN PN40 40 580 High-pressure steam, boiler feedwater, high-pressure process piping

Reference: ASME B16.34, DIN EN 1092-1. ANSI and DIN ratings are both available for basket strainers. ANSI Class 150 is the standard rating for general industrial service; DIN PN16 is the most common rating for European district heating and water distribution.

Simplex vs Duplex Basket Strainer Selection Guide

Item Simplex Basket Strainer Duplex Basket Strainer
Structure Single basket chamber Two basket chambers with diverter valve
Cleaning Method Pipeline shutdown required Continuous operation, no shutdown
Cost Lower initial cost Higher initial cost
Typical Application Water distribution, HVAC, general industrial service Continuous process, refinery, power plant, district heating main lines

Reference: ASME B16.34, API 598. Simplex basket strainer is the economical choice for intermittent service; duplex basket strainer allows basket cleaning without pipeline shutdown, ideal for continuous process and district heating service.

Basket Strainer Applications

• Water treatment and distribution: municipal water networks, pump suction and discharge protection with high dirt holding capacity basket.
• Oil and gas process piping: refinery process lines, pump protection and general hydrocarbon service with ANSI Class 150 to 600.
• Power plant and boiler service: feedwater, condensate and cooling water protection lines with large filtration area.
• District heating and HVAC: supply and return lines requiring DIN PN16 / PN25 basket strainer with fabricated body.
• Chemical and petrochemical: corrosive media filtration with CF8M, CF3M or duplex stainless steel basket and Monel screen.
• Marine and seawater service: seawater cooling and offshore platform utility lines with A890-4A / 5A body and 2205 / 2507 basket.

FAQ - Industrial Basket Strainer

Q1: What is a Basket Strainer?
A: A basket strainer (also called basket filter) is a pipeline filtration device that removes small impurities from liquid, gases and pipe systems using a perforated screen or wire mesh basket. Unlike a Y strainer, the basket strainer has a large cylindrical basket that provides a large filtration area and high dirt holding capacity. It protects downstream pumps, instruments, valves and heat exchangers from debris, scale and other solid particles. Basket strainers are available in Simplex (single basket) and Duplex (two baskets with diverter valve) configurations.
Q2: What is the difference between Simplex and Duplex Basket Strainer?
A: A Simplex Basket Strainer has one basket chamber, so the pipeline must be shut down to clean or replace the basket. It is the most economical choice for intermittent service and general industrial piping. A Duplex Basket Strainer has two basket chambers with a diverter valve, allowing one basket to be in service while the other is being cleaned. This provides continuous operation without pipeline shutdown, and is preferred for refinery, power plant, district heating main lines and other critical continuous processes. Duplex basket strainer has higher initial cost but lower total cost of ownership in continuous operation.
Q3: What body materials are available for basket strainers?
A: Basket strainer bodies are available in carbon steel (CS: A216-WCB, A234-WPB), stainless steel (SS: A351-CF8, CF8M, CF3, CF3M), duplex stainless steel (DSS: A890-4A / 5A), bronze and iron (cast iron, ductile iron). Body structure can be cast steel, welded or fabricated. The choice of body material depends on the fluid corrosiveness, operating temperature and project standard. Carbon steel is the most economical for water, oil and steam service; stainless steel and duplex are selected for corrosive, seawater and offshore service; bronze and iron are commonly used for low-pressure water and marine service.
Q4: What basket and mesh materials are available?
A: Basket (screen) and wire mesh materials are available in a wide range: stainless steel 304SS, 316SS, 316LSS, duplex stainless steel 2205 and 2507, and Monel. The perforated screen and mesh hole sizes are tailor-made to customer requirements. 304SS is the standard for general water and industrial service; 316SS and 316LSS are selected for corrosive media; duplex 2205 and super duplex 2507 are used for seawater, desalination and offshore service; Monel is selected for hydrofluoric acid and other special corrosive media.
Q5: What is the size range and pressure rating available?
A: Basket strainers are available from 1/2 inch to 36 inch (DN15 to DN900). Pressure ratings include ANSI Class 150Lbs, 300Lbs and 600Lbs, and DIN PN6, PN10, PN16, PN25 and PN40. End connections include Flanged RF / FF to ASME B16.5 (size under 24 inch) or ASME B16.47 (size above 24 inch), and Butt Weld (BW) to ASME B16.25. Cover type can be bolted cover or quick opening cover (optional). Drain connection is available as plug, flange or valve.
Q6: How do I maintain a basket strainer?
A: Basket strainer maintenance is simple: isolate the strainer, depressurize, open the cover (bolted cover or quick opening cover), remove the basket, clean or replace the screen and mesh, install a new gasket, and reassemble. For Simplex basket strainer, pipeline shutdown is required during maintenance. For Duplex basket strainer, the diverter valve allows switching to the standby basket, so cleaning can be done without pipeline shutdown. Screen replacement is recommended when the pressure drop exceeds the initial clean-screen value by 0.5-1.0 bar. For critical continuous processes, duplex configuration is strongly recommended.
