FAQ - Y Type Strainer 900LBS

Q1: What is the pressure rating of Class 900 Y type strainer?
A: Class 900 Y type strainer has a design pressure of 153 bar (2,220 psi) at ambient temperature, in accordance with ASME B16.34. It is the standard choice for wellhead, gas injection, and hydroprocessing service. For higher pressure, Class 1500 and 2500 are also available; for lower pressure, Class 600 is more economical for refinery and process piping.
Q2: Why is RTJ end connection preferred for Class 900 Y strainers?
A: At Class 900 pressure rating, the sealing reliability of the connection becomes critical. RTJ (Ring Joint) ends use a metal ring gasket that is compressed into a groove between the flange faces, providing a leak-tight seal under very high pressure and temperature. RF flanged ends can also be used for general high-pressure service, and BW ends are preferred for buried or permanent pipelines. For wellhead and gas injection, RTJ is the industry standard.
Q3: What screen materials are recommended for Class 900 wellhead service?
A: For wellhead and gas injection service, 2205 and 2507 duplex stainless steel screens are recommended. 2205 offers excellent chloride stress corrosion resistance and is suitable for most wellhead service. 2507 (super duplex) offers higher strength and corrosion resistance for sour gas (H2S-containing) and seawater injection service. SS304 and SS316 screens are available for non-corrosive high-pressure service.
Q4: What body materials are recommended for Class 900 Y strainers?
A: For general high-pressure steam, oil, and gas service, WCB carbon steel is the most economical choice. For low-temperature service down to -46°C, LCB or LCC is recommended. For sour gas and corrosive high-pressure media, CF8M (SS316) is preferred. For seawater injection, wellhead, and offshore service, A995 duplex stainless steel (4A or 5A) offers the best chloride and sour resistance under very high pressure.
Q5: What is the maximum size available for Class 900 Y type strainers?
A: Class 900 Y type strainers are available from 2 inch to 24 inch (DN50 to DN600). The maximum size is smaller than lower pressure classes because Class 900 is used for very high-pressure service where large diameter components become uneconomical. For sizes above 24 inch, a custom fabricated design can be evaluated; please contact us with your specific requirement.
Q6: How do I maintain a Class 900 very high-pressure Y strainer?
A: Class 900 Y strainer maintenance requires special attention: isolate the strainer, depressurize completely, and confirm zero pressure. Remove the cover bolts (bolted cover design) following the correct tightening sequence in reverse. Take out the screen, clean or replace it. Install a new gasket (graphite or RTJ ring) and retorque bolts to the specified torque value in a star pattern. The Y-shaped body allows screen removal without disconnecting the pipeline. For continuous very high-pressure operation, a bypass line or dual-strainer configuration is strongly recommended.
