FAQ - Super Duplex Stainless Steel Y Type Strainer

Q1: What is super duplex stainless steel A890-5A / F53?
A: A890-5A is an ASTM cast super duplex stainless steel grade defined in ASTM A890 / A995. It corresponds to UNS S32750 wrought material (also called 2507) and is designated F53 in ASTM A182 for forged components. Super duplex 5A contains approximately 25% chromium, 7% nickel, 4% molybdenum and 0.3% nitrogen, giving it a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) of ≥ 40. This provides superior resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking compared to standard duplex 2205 (A890-4A, PREN ≥ 34). It is equivalent to EN 1.4410 (X2CrNiMoN25-7-4) in European standard.
Q2: What is the difference between duplex 4A (2205) and super duplex 5A (2507)?
A: Duplex 4A (F51 / 2205, UNS S31803 / S32205) has a PREN of ≥ 34 and provides good resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, suitable for seawater, desalination and general offshore service. Super duplex 5A (F53 / 2507, UNS S32750) has a higher chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen content, giving a PREN of ≥ 40 and significantly better resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and sour gas (H2S). For seawater injection, subsea, sour gas and the most demanding offshore service, A890-5A is the recommended grade. For general seawater and desalination service, A890-4A is a more economical choice.
Q3: Why is super duplex used for seawater and offshore service?
A: Seawater contains high levels of chloride ions that cause pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in standard stainless steels such as SS304 and SS316. Even duplex 2205 can be attacked in high-temperature seawater or chlorinated seawater. Super duplex 2507 (A890-5A) with PREN ≥ 40 offers excellent resistance to these corrosion mechanisms, making it the preferred material for seawater intake, seawater injection, desalination, subsea manifolds and offshore platform piping. Its high strength also allows thinner wall thickness and lighter weight, which is beneficial for offshore structures.
Q4: What pressure rating and size range are available for super duplex Y strainers?
A: Super duplex A890-5A Y strainers are available in ANSI Class 150 as standard, with Class 300 and 600 available on request. Sizes range from 1/2 inch to 36 inch (DN15 to DN900), which is the widest size range in the Y strainer series because Class 150 is used for large-diameter low-pressure offshore and seawater lines. End connections include Flanged RF to ASME B16.5 / B16.47 A and Butt Weld (BW) to ASME B16.25.
Q5: What screen material should be used with super duplex A890-5A body?
A: For super duplex A890-5A body, the screen should match the corrosion resistance of the body. Super duplex 2507 screen is recommended for seawater injection, sour gas and subsea service. Duplex 2205 screen is suitable for general seawater and desalination service. SS316 or SS316L screen can be specified for non-chloride or low-chloride service where the corrosion resistance of super duplex is not fully required for the screen. Combined screens (perforated plate + wire mesh) are available for high dirt load service.
Q6: How do I maintain a super duplex Y strainer?
A: Super duplex Y strainer maintenance is similar to other Y strainers: isolate the strainer, depressurize, remove the cover bolts (bolted cover design), take out the screen, clean or replace it, install a new gasket (graphite + stainless steel or PTFE), and reassemble. The Y-shaped body allows screen removal without disconnecting the pipeline. For continuous offshore or seawater injection operation, a bypass line or dual-strainer configuration is strongly recommended. After maintenance, pressure test is recommended before returning to service. Avoid using carbon steel wire brushes or tools that could contaminate the super duplex surface.
