FAQ - SS304 Fabricated Basket Strainer
Q1: What is an SS304 Fabricated Basket Strainer?
A: An SS304 Fabricated Basket Strainer is a basket type pipeline filter with a welded (fabricated) stainless steel 304 body. It is rated to ANSI Class 150LB, 300LB or 600LB and available from 1 inch to 36 inch (DN25 to DN900). The body, flange and cover are all in stainless steel 304 / F304, with A182-F304 forged cover and A193 B8 / A194 8 stainless steel bolts and nuts, forming an all-stainless construction. It provides excellent corrosion resistance for water, food, beverage, chemical and general industrial service, especially where carbon steel body is not suitable.
Q2: What is the difference between SS304 and SS316 basket strainer?
A: SS304 (F304) contains 18% chromium and 8-10% nickel, offering general corrosion resistance at the lowest stainless steel cost. SS316 (F316) adds 2-3% molybdenum, providing significantly better resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and marine environments. SS304 is selected for non-chloride service such as water, food, beverage and general chemical; SS316 and SS316L are preferred for chloride-containing media, seawater, marine and pharmaceutical service. SS316L (low-carbon) also offers better weldability and resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding. For high-chloride service, duplex 2205 and super duplex 2507 are available.
Q3: What is the size range and pressure rating available?
A: SS304 fabricated basket strainers are available from 1 inch to 36 inch (DN25 to DN900). Pressure ratings include ANSI Class 150LB (19.6 bar / 285 psi), Class 300LB (51 bar / 740 psi) and Class 600LB (102 bar / 1,480 psi). End connections are Flanged RF or FF to ASME B16.5 (size under 24 inch) or ASME B16.47 A/B (size above 24 inch). Face-to-face dimension follows ASME B16.10. The 1-36 inch full size range makes SS304 fabricated basket strainer suitable for both small instrument lines and large diameter main pipelines.
Q4: What screen materials and mesh sizes are available?
A: Screens and baskets are supplied in stainless steel 304, 316 / 316L, duplex 2205 and super duplex 2507. Perforated plate hole sizes include 2mm, 3mm, 4mm and 5mm; wire mesh sizes include 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 mesh. For general water and HVAC service, 2mm or 3mm perforated plate is common; for pump and instrument protection, 40 to 100 mesh wire mesh is specified. Combined screens (perforated plate + wire mesh) are available for high dirt load with fine filtration requirement. Perforated hole size and mesh size are tailor-made to customer requirements.
Q5: What is the difference between Bolted Cover and Quick-Opening Cover?
A: Bolted Cover (B.C.) is the standard design where the blind flange F304 cover is fixed by A193 B8 bolts and A194 8 nuts. It is the most economical and provides high-pressure sealing, suitable for Class 150 to 600 service. Quick-Opening Cover is available on request for frequent cleaning service; it uses swing bolts or clamp mechanism for fast access without tools. Quick-Opening Cover is commonly specified in food, beverage and water treatment service where the basket must be cleaned regularly. For large diameter (above 24 inch) SS304 basket strainer, a davit arm design is also available for heavy cover lifting without crane.
Q6: How do I maintain an SS304 fabricated basket strainer?
A: Maintenance is simple: isolate the strainer, depressurize, remove the cover bolts (bolted cover) or release the quick-opening mechanism, take out the basket, clean or replace the screen and mesh, install a new gasket (graphite or graphite + stainless steel), and reassemble. The NPT drain plug allows draining the strainer before cover removal. For food and beverage service, clean or replace the screen after each CIP cycle. Screen replacement is recommended when the pressure drop exceeds the initial clean-screen value by 0.5-1.0 bar. For continuous operation without pipeline shutdown, a duplex basket strainer configuration is recommended.
