A351-CF8 (SS304) / CF3 (SS304L) ASTM A351 General corrosion resistance Water treatment, food and beverage, general chemical
A351-CF8M (SS316) / CF3M (SS316L) ASTM A351 Mo-bearing, chloride resistance Chemical, marine, offshore, chloride-containing media
Duplex / Super Duplex ASTM A890 / A995 High-chloride and sour resistance Seawater, desalination, offshore, sour service

Reference: ASTM A234, A106, A216, A352, A350, A351, A890. WPB and A106 are the standard wrought and seamless carbon steel choices for large diameter T type strainer. LCB and WPL6 are selected for low-temperature service down to -46°C; CF8M and duplex are selected for corrosive service.

T Type Strainer Working Principle: Straight Type and Angle Type

Type Flow Direction Screen Orientation Key Characteristic
Straight Type Straight through flow Vertical (downward) or horizontal side branch Lowest pressure drop, ideal for high-flow pipeline
Angle Type Right angle (90°) flow Horizontal side branch Replaces standard elbow, saves space in compact layout

Reference: ASME B16.34, API 598. Straight type T strainer is installed horizontally with the branch section hanging downward for liquid service; angle type is installed at 90° pipeline corners and can replace a standard elbow. For gas and steam service, the branch section points sideways to prevent condensate pooling.

FAQ - T Type Strainer 150LBS

Q1: What is a T Type Strainer 150LBS?
A: A T Type Strainer 150LBS (also called T Strainer) is a fabricated pipeline strainer with a compact T-shaped shell, rated to ANSI Class 150 (19.6 bar / 285 psi at ambient temperature). It removes foreign particles and impurities from liquid and gases using a perforated screen or wire mesh basket, protecting downstream pumps, valves, meters and other equipment. The T type strainer 150LBS is available in Straight Type and Angle Type, and is the standard choice for large diameter low-pressure pipeline service up to 36 inch (DN900).
Q2: What is the size range and end connection available?
A: T type strainer 150LBS is available from 2 inch to 36 inch (DN50 to DN900). End connections include Flanged RF (Raised Face) to ASME B16.5 (under 24 inch) or ASME B16.47 A (above 24 inch), and Butt Weld (BW) to ASME B16.25. Face-to-face dimension follows ASME B16.10. Cover type is bolted cover (blind flange) with drain plug for maintenance. The T type strainer is particularly suitable for large diameter service, with the tee body fabricated from wrought steel materials.
Q3: What body materials are available for T type strainer 150LBS?
A: This page offers the widest material range in the T type strainer series. Body materials include carbon steel (A234-WPB, A106, A216-WCB), low-temperature carbon steel (A352-LCB, WPL6), stainless steel (A351-CF8, CF8M, CF3, CF3M and SS304, SS304L, SS316, SS316L) and duplex stainless steel. Flange and cover are in A105 / A350-LF2 for carbon and low-temperature service, or A182-F304 / F304L / F316 / F316L for stainless steel. For low-temperature service down to -46°C, LCB, WPL6 and A350-LF2 are the preferred choices; for corrosive service, CF8M and duplex are selected.
Q4: What is the difference between RF and BW ends for T type strainer 150LBS?
A: RF (Raised Face) flanged ends allow easy installation and removal for maintenance, preferred for pipeline service where strainers are periodically cleaned. BW (Butt Weld) ends provide a permanent leak-tight welded connection, preferred for high-integrity service, buried pipeline or where no leakage is acceptable. For Class 150 T type strainer, both are commonly used; RF is more common for general industrial service, and BW for high-integrity and buried pipelines. RTJ end is not typically required at Class 150 because RF and BW already provide adequate sealing at this pressure rating.
Q5: What screen and mesh sizes are available?
A: Screens are supplied in stainless steel 304SS and 316SS. Mesh sizes include 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 200 and 400 mesh, tailor-made to customer requirements. For large diameter water and HVAC service, 20 to 40 mesh is common; for process piping and pump protection, 60 to 100 mesh is specified. The perforated plate and wire mesh can be combined for high dirt load service. Please specify the mesh size when requesting a quotation.
Q6: How do I maintain a T type strainer 150LBS?
A: Maintenance is simple: isolate the strainer, depressurize, open the drain plug to drain the strainer, remove the blind flange cover bolts, take out the screen, clean or replace it, install a new gasket, and reassemble. The T type strainer body has a bolted cover (blind flange) on the branch chamber for easy access. Because the branch chamber is isolated from the main flow path, opening it does not cause a massive spill of process fluid. For large diameter T type strainer (above 24 inch), a davit arm design is recommended for heavy cover lifting without crane. Screen replacement is recommended when the pressure drop exceeds the initial clean-screen value by 0.5-1.0 bar.
