Tengs Valve supplies high-quality Temporary Conical Strainers, one of the temporary strainer series, also called Temporary Cone Strainer, Cone Strainer or Conical Strainer. The cone-shaped screen with ring flange is fabricated from stainless steel or special materials, designed to be mounted between two flanges during system startup, commissioning or maintenance. Main sizes range from 3/4 inch to 36 inch (DN20 to DN900), with pressure rating ANSI Class 150# to 1500#. Perforated screens and mesh materials include SS304, SS316, SS304L, SS316L, duplex stainless steel and Monel. Perforated hole size and mesh size are tailor-made to customer requirements. The conical type must be installed with the cone tip against the flow direction. Open area of screen can be specified as 100%, 150%, 200% or 300% for different dirt load conditions.

FAQ - Temporary Conical Strainer

Q1: What is a Temporary Conical Strainer?
A: A Temporary Conical Strainer (also called Temporary Cone Strainer, Cone Strainer or Conical Strainer) is a temporary filtration device with a cone-shaped screen and ring flange, mounted between two flanges in the pipeline during system startup, commissioning or maintenance. The cone tip must be installed against the flow direction. It protects pumps, valves, meters and other critical equipment from debris such as weld slag, rust, scale and foreign materials. After the system is cleaned, the temporary conical strainer is removed and replaced by a spacer or permanent strainer.
Q2: What is the Open Area of Screen and how do I select it?
A: The Open Area of Screen refers to the ratio of the open area to the pipe cross-sectional area, expressed as a percentage. Standard options are 100%, 150%, 200% and 300%. 100% open area provides the standard filtration capacity with the shortest cone length (H) and lowest pressure drop; it is suitable for general start-up service. 200% and 300% open areas provide higher filtration capacity for high dirt load and extended service, but require a longer cone length (H). Please specify the open area when requesting a quotation. The H dimension in the dimension table corresponds to each open area percentage.
Q3: What materials are available for Temporary Conical Strainer?
A: Perforated screens and mesh materials include SS304, SS316, SS304L, SS316L, duplex stainless steel and Monel. SS304 is the standard and most economical choice for general water, HVAC and non-chloride service; SS316(L) is selected for chloride-containing and corrosive media; duplex 2205 / 2507 are used for seawater, desalination and offshore service; Monel is selected for hydrofluoric acid and other special corrosive media. Perforated hole size and mesh size are tailor-made to customer requirements. Please specify the material when requesting a quotation.
Q4: What is the size range and pressure rating available?
A: Temporary conical strainers are available from 3/4 inch to 36 inch (DN20 to DN900). Pressure ratings include ANSI Class 150#, 300#, 600#, 900# and 1500#. Flange standards include ASME B16.5 (under 24 inch), ASME B16.47 (above 24 inch) and DIN EN 1092-1. For 30 inch and 36 inch, Class 1500# is not available. The temporary conical strainer is mounted between two standard flanges in the pipeline, and its ring flange dimension matches the mating flange standard. Please specify the flange standard and pressure rating when requesting a quotation.
Q5: How is the Temporary Conical Strainer installed?
A: The temporary conical strainer is installed between two flanges in the pipeline. The ring flange is sandwiched between the two mating flanges, and the bolts are tightened to compress the gasket and secure the strainer. The most important installation requirement is that the cone tip must point against the flow direction, so that the flowing medium enters the inside of the cone and the debris is captured inside. If installed in the wrong direction, the cone may collapse under differential pressure. Installation is quick and does not require welding or special tools. After system flushing or commissioning is complete, the temporary conical strainer is removed by loosening the flange bolts.
Q6: What is the difference between Temporary Conical Strainer and other temporary strainer types?
A: Temporary Conical Strainer has a cone-shaped screen with ring flange; it is the standard type for general start-up service with medium filtration area. Temporary Basket Strainer has a cylindrical basket screen with ring flange, providing the largest filtration area for high dirt load and system flushing service. Temporary Plate Strainer has a flat perforated plate with ring flange, offering the lowest cost and lowest pressure drop for temporary protection in horizontal pipeline. All three types are available from 3/4 inch to 36 inch. Please refer to our Temporary Basket Strainer and Temporary Plate Strainer pages for more information.
