FAQ - Forged Y Type Strainer 900LBS - 1500LBS
Q1: What is a Forged Y Type Strainer 900LBS - 1500LBS?
A: A Forged Y Type Strainer 900LBS - 1500LBS is a Y-shaped pipeline strainer with a forged steel body, rated to ANSI Class 900 (153 bar / 2,220 psi) or Class 1500 (260 bar / 3,750 psi). It is designed for bore sizes from 3/8 inch to 2 inch (DN10 to DN50) and is the standard choice for ultra high-pressure small bore piping, wellhead, gas injection and hydraulic systems. The forged body provides higher strength and tighter grain structure than cast body, making it suitable for ultra high-pressure and thermal shock service.
Q2: What is the difference between 900LBS and 1500LBS?
A: 900LBS has a design pressure of 153 bar (2,220 psi) at ambient temperature; 1500LBS has a design pressure of 260 bar (3,750 psi), in accordance with ASME B16.34. Both are ultra high-pressure classes for small bore forged Y strainer service. 900LBS is selected for very high-pressure process and gas injection service; 1500LBS is selected for the most demanding wellhead, gas injection and hydraulic systems. Flange and wall thickness dimensions differ between the two ratings, and must be specified when ordering.
Q3: What is the difference between Bolted Bonnet and Welded Bonnet?
A: Bolted Bonnet design allows the bonnet to be removed by loosening the bolts, making screen cleaning and replacement easy without cutting or welding. Welded Bonnet design provides a permanent leak-tight welded connection, preferred for high-integrity and ultra high-pressure service where no leakage is acceptable. For 900LBS - 1500LBS forged Y strainer, both designs are available. Bolted Bonnet is more common for maintenance-accessible service; Welded Bonnet is strongly recommended for wellhead, gas injection and critical ultra high-pressure service where the strainer is not frequently cleaned.
Q4: Why is only Full Port available for 900LBS - 1500LBS?
A: For 900LBS - 1500LBS ultra high-pressure service, only Full Port (F.P.) is available. At these pressure ratings, the wall thickness required for Reduced Port design would be very large, making the strainer uneconomical and heavy. Full Port provides the lowest pressure drop and highest flow capacity, which is important for instrument and hydraulic systems. The 800LBS class offers both Full Port and Reduced Port; for 900LBS and 1500LBS, only Full Port is supplied.
Q5: What body materials are available for Forged Y Strainer 900LBS - 1500LBS?
A: Body and bonnet materials include forged carbon steel (A105, LF2 for low-temperature service down to -46°C), stainless steel (SS304, SS304L, SS316, SS316L) and duplex (F51, F53). A105 is the standard and most economical choice for general ultra high-pressure service; LF2 is selected for low-temperature service; SS304 and SS316 are selected for corrosive service; F51 and F53 duplex are used for high-chloride and sour service. Screen is 304SS or 316SS. Please specify the material when requesting a quotation.
Q6: How do I maintain a Forged Y Strainer 900LBS - 1500LBS?
A: Maintenance requires strict procedure: isolate the strainer, depressurize completely, and confirm zero pressure. Remove the bonnet (bolted bonnet or welded bonnet), take out the screen, clean or replace it, install a new gasket (graphite + 304SS / 316SS), and retorque bolts to specified torque value. The Y-shaped body allows screen removal without disconnecting the pipeline. For welded bonnet design, the bonnet must be cut and re-welded during screen replacement; for bolted bonnet design, the bonnet can be removed by loosening the bolts. After maintenance, pressure test is required before returning to service.
